Man I love this shit. Not only do I get a dope track, but with your footnotes and more? It's a fucking essay and there is so much here! The Prolog ends with a man turning through the pages and then...
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽, thank you so much! I really appreciate that. Especially the part of it being an essay. It’s just sorta how my mind works, and appreciate that what was produced is appreciated 😊🙏🏽
I lean towards the view that Jesus was an anarchist who was very much against Rome.
The flipping of the tables is a always an inspiring image as it shows the human side. But for me, the most radical teachings he has is turn the other cheek.
In your question there, could I turn the other cheek on a cheating spouse? Could I turn the other cheek on someone or a group that harmed me?
I think that's incredibly hard to do -- it requires divine strength.
For the record, I don't consider myself even very religious.
But I really liked the way you came at this, wrestled with it and what came out as a result!
Thanks Josh for taking the time to listen and engage. I know that these themes are important as it relates to war and I appreciate your efforts in bringing awareness to this.
That point on Turing the other cheek and this being a profound statement is true for me. I think, in this piece I try to draw out the ironic human experience of how do we actually do this turn the other cheek when violence is part of our survival programming.
I use a bit of humor but I try to draw out these truths similar to a comedian who uses humor to touch on truths. I think it’s a bit of a mystery (to turn the cheek) and humor helps us deal with this mystery. Like how do you actually turn the other cheek? How do you use violence? Especially when the very genre I am playing in uses violence so carelessly and loves to liken men to Jesus — humor helps not to sound so preachy. lol Then there is the whole narrative in Christianity around purity and profanity. And that dilemma of when we try to purifier ourselves, we often get our hands dirty. I think Zen can help us here—seeing the inter-relational nature of things. But, that reality is far too vast for words, so, here I am using raps and footnotes to describe something that just is. A deep mystery. This is me trying to work through my own Catholic program in relation to Zen’s notion of no-separation. The footnotes is where I try and do that work.
All and all it’s also to say to take one’s self too seriously. And also just enjoy fun rap that’s also just trash talkin’. lol when understanding that is what one is doing. Playing.
I really appreciate your thoughtful response Josh. Thank you 🙏🏽
Oh well people take them selves way to seriously here, even myself sometimes (often? idk), so no issues there! Yeah, this topic is loaded for sure and its perhaps too difficult to bring up without it feeling way to heavy. So I was impressed how you folded this in with your own style.
Yes, on the note of it being difficult without bringing heavy feelings. Something that I often reflect on is how we create warriors out of children. And Jesus‘s position, the sort of sacrifice he is ment to make as a young man, and the way we draft or send our youth into war. It’s serious deep narrative work we are all grappling with and I genuinely appreciate what you’re doing 🙏🏽💚.

It's just fantastic. I love all of it
